phpLD Vocabulary and Common Terms

phpLD DictionaryLet’s talk about the basic lingo or terms you will hear often when you are reading about our product.

Categories - Before you start adding content to your website, you will want to add some categories, which help you organize your information. For example, if you were making a site about soccer, you might want to have categories like Players, Teams, Soccer Balls, Videos, and Pictures. Then when the user clicks on Players, they might see a list of link or articles about different soccer players.

Subcategories - While not required, you can have categories that are subcategories of other categories. For example, after the user clicks on Teams, there might be links to each soccer team, and after clicking on a specific team name they will see content relevant to that team. In this example, we would call Teams the “parent category” of the specific team category, and the specific team would be the “child category” of the Teams category. With phpLD you can have an unlimited number of levels of categories and subcategories.

Link Types - Not all content you want to add to your website is the same, and phpLD has done a great job of making it easy to add different types of content. Let’s look at some of the most common link types:

  1. Regular Links - The very first link type introduced in our product around 2005 were called just “Links” consisting of the Title of the link, the URL (address of the website), and a short description of what the link is about. So in our example, you might include a clickable link that allows visitors or your site to leave your site and visit one of the soccer team sites.
  2. Articles - Very similar to a web blog, articles allow you to write an article, add pictures, format the text, etc. So in our example directory, you might write an article about your favorite player to share with visitors of your site.
  3. Videos - Some of the most viewed content on the web is in the video format, and phpLD makes it really easy to embed videos to show your visitors. You simply copy the URL where you found the video on sites like YouTube and that video will automatically be embedded and the user can click on it and start watching directly from your website!
  4. Picture Links - Put simply, a Picture Link is an image and a text link together. You click on either one and you go deeper into your site or visit another website. Sometimes text alone does not inspire someone to click deeper into your site, but including an image increase the click thru rate dramatically. Sites like and make great use of picture links. Picture Links can also be great for featuring products or even making money using an affiliate program.
  5. Business Listings - Sites like Yelp are examples of sites that show business listings. phpLD offers a similar way to show businesses including the name of the business, the address, phone number, an image and a google map to help people see where it is located. In our example, we might include a list of Soccer stadiums so people could find them on a map.

Widgets - Throughout your phpLD website there are locations where you can insert widgets, and put simply, a widget is block of content that displays something. Examples would include Google Adsense, a list of the latest links, a text block where you can insert some text, or a banner advertisement.

Pages - A special content type used to create specific pages on your site like Terms of Service or Privacy Policy. Pages are not connected to a category and are usually referenced in places like the menu, the footer of the site, or displayed as a list from a widget.

Template - Other names often used are “theme” or “skin” and the template refers to the overall design of the site. There are many different templates available and following a few easy steps it you can change the design of your site quickly. phpLD offers its own themes, but there is also a market where 3rd party designers offer templates for sale or for free. Often the free templates have a requirement like a link back to the designer’s site.
