Helpful HintsYou’ve purchased the latest version of phpLD, created your database, uploaded your files, changed your permissions and installed the software. Now what do you do?

We know you want to get in there and start adding categories and links, but there are a few things you should do first. This article was written for v3.4 but most should also be applicable to 3.2+

Make Your Directory Yours

In your phpLD Admin panel, click Settings then Site. You will see several options.
Name: This will be the name of your directory site, examples are: My Free Directory or The Best Paid Directory, etc.
URL: This is the actual address of your directory on the Internet. You’ll want to make sure you add the trailing /
Contact Email: This is the email address to where messages from the contact form will go.
Main Content: Here, you can express yourself, introduce the directory, tell the world about the great sale you’re having! What you enter here will show on the main page of your directory only.
Submission Terms: These are the terms or guidelines you’d like submitters to follow for both articles and links. There is a suggestion already entered for you, but feel free to customize the message, make it yours.
Server offset time: Often our server (host) is located in another time zone. We can correct for this here. The current server time is listed for you to see. If it doesn’t match, you can adjust it.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Directory to go to the next section.

Directory Title: This is what will be shown on the breadcrumb trail on your directory, it can be the same as the above sections Name or usually a variant of it.
Categories columns: How many columns of categories would you like? Two is the default, but, depending on the template you are using or the amount of categories you will have this can be changed.
Show count: Show the link and subcategory count next to the category title, example Books(13).
Subcategories preview: How many subcategories to show underneath the main categories on the main page.
Category selection method: If you’re going to have a large number of categories, AJAX is recommended, but you can choose either and see which one you like best.
Enable PageRank: Allow the software to collect the Google™ PageRank of the links in your directory.
Show PageRank: If the above is set to Yes, do you want to show the PageRank to the visitors of your website?
Default link sorting: Default here is alphabetical, but you can choose how links within the directory will be displayed.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Link Submit to go to the next section.

Require registered user: Do you want your submitters to create an account on your directory in order to submit links? Advantages include: Cutting down of spam submissions and gives the submitter the option to edit their listings.
Require reciprocal link: Set this to yes if you want a linkback from the submitted site.
Show reciprocal link field: If the above is set to no, do you still want to show the field to submitters to give them the option of linking back even though you don’t require it.
Require an URL on submit form: If you’re going run a business directory, not all submitted resources are necessarily going to have a website. Set this to No to accept submissions that do not have a URL or website.
Google Maps: Like the above, if you’re going run a business directory, you may want to show a map to your visitors so that they can located the business.
Allow multiple submit: This allows sites to be submitted to more than one category in the directory.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Article Submit to go to the next section.

Require registered user: Same as with the links in the directory, are you going to require the article submitters to create an account. The advantages are the same as above for Link Submit.
Disable Article Submissions: Just want to run a link directory? Set this to no and you will not receive article submissions.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Search Engine Optimization to go to the next section.

Enable URL rewrite: This option let’s you have what’s called in the industry, Search Engine Friendly URLs. An example of one would be: www.domain.com/this-is-the-link.html - an example of one that may not be so SE-friendly is www.domain.com/index.php?c=45?s=H?p=1
Rewrite Output: In conjunction with the above, how do you want the URLs to look?
Output extension: In conjunction with the above two, this is up to you.
Enable META tags: For SEO purposes, this is usually suggested.
Default META keywords: Do a search on your favorite search engine for more information on what to place here.
Default META description: Do a search on your favorite search engine for more information on what to place here.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Image Verification to go to the next section.

The settings in this section will help cut down on spam submissions to your directory. Use of this feature is up to you.

Now click Save. Click Settings then Search Engine Optimization to go to the next section.
