View Full Version : [MOD] Geographic Category Import (DMOZ)

Hello,

I was introduced to phpLD about a month ago because of my interest in creating a geographic link index.

In the process, I created a 15MB file (52,000 categories) of regionally based categories. The process was very painful, but I have a full list complete.

I've created the file so that it can be imported into the category structure via mySQL .csv import. It has friendly URLs and all deep locations down to cities, states, and countries. UK goes even deeper.

I will offer this modification to anyone for FREE - only thing I ask for are links in return :)

Any interest here? Am I following the right guidelines for the forum?

Thanks,

Laneh

Hi, I'm so sorry for the late reply. We found errors in our database, so once we fix those, I'll send it over :)

The problem was that I missed a category relation. I also realized that some sub categories have WAY TOO MANY sub sub categories, so I've come up with a solution of alphabetizing the categories as "A B C D ..." for each locality.

You guys will be impressed, and I am not going to sell it. All I ask are some links :)

Hi Everyone,

I don't want to provide a buggy file, so I'm testing this over and over.

I've discovered that the best way to deal with locations with many sub locations is to use an alphabetizer in the SQL.

This will be done soon guys!

Thanks.

Yep, I'm also interested.

Perhaps a way forward for such a large category base is to employ AJAX auto-complete?

Just start typing the letters of the country and they show up in a list as you type. Once country is
selected, the next field is regions, the cities then towns.

Check this out for possibilities:

By the way, my idea above is for the submitter, not the surfer.

I can't imagine how the drop down would look on the submission page with
such a large array of choices.

Okay, I think I've finished the file. It includes alphabetization of all sub locations of countries with large amounts of sub locations.

If you are interested, please PM, I am giving this away for free in exchange for footer links.

It is a very large file and took quite a bit of work! It does not include any support at all. I am probably not going to venture much more into phpLD because of a new career I have started, however, if there are major errors please respond here with the error.

There is some mySQL experience required to import this file.

This sounds great, any chance of putting a link up publicly?

If you put up link to a page with a download on it, I bet you would get a lot of links to that page, plus I think most people would give you a footer link if you asked for it on that page.

If not, could you please PM me?
