Sponsoring a template can be a great way to build links. Now there has been some concern that this practice can lead to a google penalty, and there are certainly examples of sites that received a penalty when ONE of their link building strategies was theme sponsorship. However, having followed this for some years now, if such penalties exist they are temporary at best, because there are lots of examples of sites today that have great pagerank and have sponsored themes in the past. And it can almost be said that they have a higher pagerank BECAUSE of the links they received from sponsors.
Additionally, when you sponsor a template that does very well, in other words, many people download and use it, there can be a huge benefit in terms of traffic as well. I would certainly do it again, but probably would not focus on this method of building links too heavily, as all link building strategies can be overdone.
