View Full Version : Choosing the best host for your directory

I have had a couple of people recently have trouble with their host, where they lost data or had trouble getting support. I just want to tell everyone it is a pretty good idea to do a search over at www.webhostingtalk.com before selecting a host to make sure you are not choosing a bad one. Also, one site that gives pretty honest advice is www.whreviews.com
As of today, I have started blocking ads from ipower.com (was appearing in google ads). They consistently get bad reviews over at Webhosting Talk, and I wouldn't want someone to accidentally think we were promoting this host. The ads should not be appearing much longer, and I apologize for allowing ipower.com ads to appear here.
If you want to support us, click on the "Advertise on this site" link in the ad above. Maybe you have a product to offer that would be of benefit to phpLD users.
(Note: to the best of my knowledge, I am allowed to make this statement. Please correct me if I am wrong.)
I really do agree with your post. Many hosts are bad and dont have good support. Im hosted with www.polurnet.com and have been since aug 05'. They are a great host and im very pleased with them. By the way, im still seeing the ipower ads.

My first advice is to stay away from Godaddy.com for hosting. I paid for 2 years and moved in a coupled of days. They weren't worth the time.

I think the ipower adds are no longer appearing now. Let me know if otherwise. I have heard good things about polurnet too. Agreed about godaddy. They are not expert enough on the hosting business.

Wouldn't you know it....
I disabled ipower.com in the ads and now they are showing ipowerweb.com, so now I am disabling that.

Yes, they are a good host. The only thing I did not like was their control panel. www.phpld.com is hosted with dreamhost right now.

Question from a newbie :) Am looking into designing my first ever directory and I wrote my current host a quick email regarding possible installation and hosting of the PhP Link Directory and this is what said when they reponded back:
"Hi Ray,
PHPlinks is disabled on Fantastico since it had many security risks, we are checking if its new version is safe and shall keep you posted soon.
Best regards,
Support

Do you know if the secuity issues my current host is referring too has been resolved in 3.1? I have no intentions of switching hosts as I have used them for a while now but am very interested in integrating a PhP Links Directory into a new hosting package through these guys.....payin my 25 of course...can't afford 75 plus I don't mind the link back ;) Thanks for your response :)

Just checked on this for you. Take a look at this thread. This is nothing to do with phplinkdirectory which has no security issues that I know of. David will no doubt respond and advise you better. If this scipt had issues I would never endorse it, I do however, I think it is one of the best and safest scripts on the internet, so you can use without worry :)

Yes, it is not related to phpLD at all. It is an old script.

I was wandering what the link was for....I was like I don't see a thread. You are stating it is for an entirely different links package....back to emailing them I go....heh Thanks again will await their new response :)

i have 3 separate acounts with dreamhost. they are good. can be a bit of a pain at times though.
they *just* implemented a backup service for databses. you chck your panel?
i think that's a great feature to have.

Thanks for the quick responses you guys. I received notification back from my email they were in fact talking about the link you two listed above and not your Directory script. Registered my domain name/hosting package and now am just awaiting a response from my host stating I may begin uploading :) look forward to doing my first ever directory and hopefully will one offer plenty of contributions to the forum here :)

We try to get things right now and again, especially if it means protecting phpLD
Good luck on your ventures.
