View Full Version : 3.0 Scheduled for February 1, 2006

The first release of 3.0 is scheduled to be availble right around February 1. This is still a soft deadline, but we will do our best to have it ready (barring any unforseen issues). Here are some bullet points covering some of the FYIs about the release:
1. The cost of 3.0 if a link will be maintianed to this site is $25 PER installation of the software.
2. The cost of 3.0 if a link will NOT be maintianed to this site is $75 PER installation of the software.
3. There will be a private forum for 3.0 where people can ask questions, discuss mods and code submission, and get help for their questions. The cost of gaining access to this forum will be $10 per year.
4. Purchasers of 3.0 will have access to future upgrades of the 3.0 branch. A 4.0 version is planned, but it will be at least 6 months after the release for 3.0 (probably more). When 4.0 is released, 3.0 will become free (but let's not worry about that right now!).
5. Keep in mind that things will probably get a little crazy after the release. We will our best to help people that are trying to transition from 2.0 to 3.0.
6. Instructions about the upgrade process will become available shortly AFTER the release of 3.0. We expect the upgrade process to be rather easy if the directory is not heavily modded, and it actually may be easy even if there mods, especially with regard to the database.
7. Over the first couple of weeks, we expect details about integrating 2.0 mods with 3.0 to become available. In many cases, I expect little of no changes will be needed, but some patience may be needed.
8. Obviously, if your directory is an important resource, you will be strongly encouraged to setup a "test" installation of your server with it's own database, rather than trying to overwrite your live files. Once your test install is working, then you can move the files to the "live" folder.
If you are a supporter/fan of this software, and you want to help out, we are now accepting some pre-payments for 3.0. These pre-payments will help us be better able to make the transition to 3.0 smooth for everyone. Please PM me if you are interested in doing this.
Also, if you are a member of a webmaster forum or in some way can help spread the word about this upcoming release it would be MUCH appreciated!
Thanks for your support! (and see you on the other side)

First, we will release what is completed (just finished the Google Sitemap feature today btw). Then you can count on seeing a lot more progress as people start buying 3.0. By purchasing 3.0 you will be directly contributing to the further development of it.
Also, I can now say that I have what I believe is a finished copy of 3.0 in my hands right now. :)
There is still more to do, but just want you to know that things are on schedule.

I would definitely backup everything just in case something goes horribly wrong, you can always quickly put back the 2.0 version of your site until your problems can get solved.

Yes, backup, backup, backup!
Did I say backup?
This includes all the files and the database.
We don't want to have to hear sob stories about the upgrade failing and losing important files or data. We want this to be a positive experience! :D

So it will be $25 +$10 to get the script and the access to the special forum or is 1 year included with the initial $25?
And when 4.0 is released we'd have to purchase that one as well? Or is this lifetime updates.
Thanks

Yes, $25 for 3.0 and $10 for access to the support forum. So that means people with more than one directory will only want to purchase access once.
4.0 is long way off. I don't want make any promises at this point. It is possible that you would need to pay for 4.0 again, but I will sure try to make it worth it should we get to that point.

As you purchase the new version, I hope you will realize that you are partnering with me and one another. We will have a greater pool of resources to take care of problematic features, and hopefully we can make some wonderful progress toward building the best directories on the net.
Outstanding. I was sitting around this evening thinking about adding another website and considering making it a directory. I just might pre-pay tonight. Still doing some research regarding making money with a directory though.

Well, didn't take long for the questions.
I will probably be getting one version without the link, and one with the link, and access to the forum.
How do I pre-pay?
and will Ap0s7le be available for installation help? :) He set up the directory that I will be upgrading and I dont even want to begin to mess with that.

Hi, if you want to pre-pay, just PM me. I'll fill you in.
If you need help, I'll make sure you get it, should ap0s7le not be available (but he probably will).

I think many of those who have contributed with ideas and/or code will be upset that you are charging for the software.
I'm not saying that it's a large fee, and i know you have to pay your bills, but i bet you can handle that with your partner programs etc..
Greed doesn't go hand in hand with OS.
If you're planning to pay for contributions in the future I think charging is reasonable, otherwise well... you know.

Well, $25 is not a lot. I can't pay everybody who helps.
You are not obligated to pay.
One thing you may not understand is that 3.0 as it is today will become free in approximately 6 months. People are paying to be able to get their mods done faster, and get access to the newest features.
I am not going to feel bad about making money for the many hours I spend working on this. And I know that other people are benefiting too, and that is why they have a desire to contribute. If you want to help us financially or with your time, great! If not, get the free version.
Added: I have spent several thousand dollars already before I received a dime from anyone.

David,
Don't worry about getting money. You do deserve a bit of help, and I doubt anyone would consider your approach to be greedy by any stretch.
To be honest, I don't mind paying to support the software, and I don't mind paying to help promote a particular mod. So many other software communities have their roadmaps driven purely by developers. Sometimes this makes sense, but other times you get a large majority of users screaming for mods that get ignored by the developer few (e.g. Drupal).
I understand that the people who bring the skill will obviously carry more weight than those who don't, but a community should fundamentally be driven from the users of that particular product, regardless of their ability to write code. PHPLD seems to follow that model.
By the way, I paid for the unbranded version. Where do I pay for the support access?
Geoffrey
