I am sorta finding myself using linux (suse 10.1) more and more these days but still have to drop back on to winblows machine now and then to do graphics and other stuff.
What I would like is a list of essential software for website development.
ie, Scripting, Graphics, Localhost Apache Server (I use XAMPP at mo) etc etc.
Any info would be greatly recieved.
Thanks
Psyclones.
(I linux newbie)ish
Finally I'm no more alone here with Linux :)
I am using Fedora Core 5 and CentOS, but the software is not different from SuSe.
I am using the default Apache 2.2.0 server with MySQL 5.0.22 and PHP 5.1.4 that came all with the OS installation. On Suse you should have them too, but can also find RPMs or install them more easy via YAST.
I am also using XAMPP for testing with PHP 4. But is should be enough if you are using only XAMPP.
Browsers: Firefox and Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/linux/)
PHP, HTML, CSS Editors:Quanta++ (http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/) (my favorite, comes with KDE),Bluefish (http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/), VIM (http://www.vim.org/)
FTP client: gFTP (http://gftp.org/)
Image editor: The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) (best), Google's Picassa (http://picasa.google.com/) and Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/) (vector graphics)
Let me know if you need some more tips, etc. ;)
You will have a great time with Linux, I'm using it now for about 2.5 years or more and I'm never thinking to switch back to Windows.
