Hi!

In the admin area there is a setting called "*Enable ID: Enable the ID in the reciprocal links."

I've noticed when activated it inserts an ID into the reciprocal links but what are these ids used for? I mean what's the purpose of them? Do they help to check for reciprocal links and if so, how?

(By the way, I think it would be better to have a checkbox for such Yes/No settings instead of a drop down option menu.)

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ronny,

Since the ID that is generated for each link added to your directory is unique, it will ensure that the link to your directory is unique too.

Hmm, as far as I could find out, those who would like to place a link in my directory have to include the ID in their reciprocal links.

I understand that with the ID, the reciprocal link pointing to my directory has a unique piece in it, but what's the purpose of that unique string? I mean how does it help me to know the link has a unique string in it? I somehow still don't really understand the purpose of it.

I mean if somebody already had a link to my directory but no backlink, he would have to add a new link with the unique ID if he wants a link from me to him, but the chance somebody is already linking to my directory without a backlink and then wants a backlink but.. well, I really don't understand how it can help me.

Thanks again.

Originally, the link ID was the only method to link back, allowing us to count referals from each source. That was not popular, so we made it optional. In the future, we may want to also make the default install have this turned off.

Well, I know Aardvark Topsites PHP has a function that's measuring in hits from backlinks server side. In other words, a link without ID yould be fine, as the server tracks the referrer domain.

This I think is one beautiful solution indeed.
