Directory software, rebuilt

What is phpLD?

phpLD, short for PHP Link Directory, is software for building curated directory websites: resource hubs, local guides, business directories, software catalogs, link collections, and niche communities.

The original phpLD 2 script dates back to 2007, with phpLD 3 arriving shortly after as the next major generation. The current rebuild is called phpLD Next for now, though it may eventually become phpLD with a higher version number. Either way, the focus is the same: easier installation, cleaner administration, upgradeable releases, and directory tools that can grow with the site.

phpLD Next today

Installable, testable, and actively improving.

The current release is early, but it already includes the foundation for categories, listings, submissions, custom fields, media, spam protection, language packs, and admin maintenance.

The simple idea

A directory turns scattered information into a browsable site.

Most directory sites start with a category structure. A health food directory might have categories for fruits, vegetables, supplements, grains, stores, recipes, and research. A local business directory might organize listings by service type and city. A software catalog might group tools by use case.

Each category can contain listings, links, descriptions, contact details, media, and custom fields. Visitors get a site that is easier to browse than a spreadsheet, a bookmark list, or a loose collection of blog posts.

Common uses

  • Curated link directories
  • Local business and service guides
  • Resource libraries and research hubs
  • Software, vendor, or product catalogs
  • Professional member directories
  • Paid or featured listing sites

Organized categories

Create nested categories so visitors can move from broad topics into the exact resources they need.

Listings and submissions

Publish your own listings, accept public submissions, and review new entries before they appear on the site.

Custom fields

Add structured details that fit the directory, from location and pricing to specialty, language, file type, or service area.

Media support

Use images and visual cards to make categories and listings feel more polished and useful.

Install and update flow

phpLD Next is being built around a browser installer and in-app update checks, so routine setup and maintenance are less manual.

Free core, optional help

The free download remains the starting point. Paid options are aimed at convenience, support, installation help, and future premium tools.

PHPLD is for people who want to own a focused directory site instead of sending every visitor to a generic search engine, social feed, or marketplace.

Why use directory software?

A directory gives structure to a niche.

Search engines are good at finding individual pages, but they do not always provide the human judgment, categories, filters, notes, and approval workflow that a focused directory owner can offer.

With phpLD Next, the goal is to make that kind of site practical again: easier to install, easier to update, and flexible enough for simple link directories as well as richer listing sites.

Good fit when you need

  • A public list of recommended resources
  • Approved submissions instead of open posting
  • Category pages that can rank and stay useful
  • Listing details beyond a title and URL
  • A directory you control on your own domain

Getting started

Try the current release or choose installation help.

You can create a free account to download phpLD Next and follow the changelog. If you would rather have help with setup, the installation service is the better path than the old one-time “Buy Now” button this page used to show.

Next steps

Start with the free download, then add help only if you need it.
